16 May

A May 14th kittens update.

Well she moved the kittens yesterday…

She didn’t move them far though. She only moved them to behind my son’s plastic pool for the shade. I watched from a distance and noticed she didn’t take the calico with her.

An hour later, after I had something to eat, I noticed she still had not returned the short distance (less than 16 inches) for the calico. So I went back in the house and opened the new package of rubber gloves.

Carefully so I would not hurt the now day and a half old kitten I picked it up and placed it the short distance away in the new spot. I hung back a while and watched. The kitten started nursing immediately and she showed no signs of rejecting it.

The rubber glove helped keep my scent off the kitten. I also think though that since she is tamer now that helped. Had she still been more wild and I did that the outcome could have been very different.

A check made this morning shows all five kittens are in the new nest and appear to be doing very well. I will be keeping a semi-close eye on them. I don’t want to spook her so she moves them somewhere I don’t know about.

That would cause real problems in making sure these kittens are socialized enough to not end up joining the small wild population. I am thankful due to my efforts that the wild population is a lot smaller than it was when I moved here… and it keeps getting smaller each year.

I must being doing some good.
